The smartphone market has suddenly brightened up with the entry of gaming smartphones. Already, we have seen the entry of Nubia Red Magic 3, which has been touted as one of the best gaming phones. There are some other vendors as well, who have either announced or launched their gaming smartphone in the market. Definitely, with the entry of the gaming phones, the phones have been converted into machines. These are the machines which guarantee high performance, more stability, and better cooling. Yes, these are the required features of the gaming phone. The new entrant in the market is ASUS ROG 2, which is already being considered as a tough competitor to Nubia Red Magic. This phone is for those users who are looking for the next-gen gaming experience.
First of all, you should know that this is a follow-up the release of Asus ROG Phone, which was released in the UK in 2018. However, it never made its way to India. But this time Asus ROG Phone will be released in India as well, and the company has already confirmed its launch in India. As per the sources, the phone will be launched on July 23rd in India. However, there has been no confirmation on the price. It is believed that the phone will be priced between Rs. 45,000 to Rs.55,000. ASUS has confirmed that the phone will have two different variants. From the price point, it is quite clear that this phone is going to have a strong hardware platform.
It has got an AMOLED display, with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Obviously, at this price, it is definitely going to have a bezel-less screen. The screen will have corning gorilla glass, and the supported resolution will be 1080 X 2160 pixels. The screen size which is pretty important for a gaming phone is 6.24-inches. Now, that screen size is pretty ordinary in terms of gaming phones. We did expect that at least it will have a screen size of 6.5-inches, which will allow the users to experience the high-end games. Similarly, a super AMOLED screen would have been a better choice, especially for creating livelier graphics. Hence, the phone disappoints in terms of graphics. It will have Adreno 640 as GPU from Qualcomm. The Adreno 640 is integrated on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC. The benchmark for this chip is yet to be determined, as this is a new release. However, Qualcomm has confirmed that there is 20 percent improvement in the performance in comparison to Adreno 630, and it can handle graphics intensive games quite easily. We are yet to see a phone with Adreno 640 GPU in 2019. One of the best things about Adreno 640 GPU is, it supports the Vulkan 1.1 API. Vulkan 1.1 API is required for the generation of 3D graphics and other types of intensive graphics computations which are required for gaming. This will ensure that even a resource intensive game will run smoothly without any form of lags. It has got Octa-core (2.84 GHz, Single core, Kryo 485 + 2.42 GHz, Tri-core, Kryo 485 + 1.8 GHz, Quad core, Kryo 485). An Octa-core processor is the best bet for resource-hungry applications. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is known for energy savings and enhance performance. Moreover, the phone will run on a 64-bit architecture, that is a basic requirement for a gaming phone. The phone comes with 8GB RAM. Ideally, a 12 GB RAM configuration would have been best for a gaming phone. An 8GB RAM might not be optimum for a gaming phone, and there might be occasional lags.
Asus ROG phone 2 has 256 GB internal storage, which quite good for a smartphone. However, there is no expandable memory, which is quite common with the flagship premium phones. But it has USB OTG support. So, in case if you really need some space or extra storage, your USB storage can rescue you. Asus ROG phone 2 has got a triple camera setup at the rear, that is made up of 16MP + 8MP + 5MP lenses. While there is a 16 MP front camera, with LED flash. There are multiple shooting modes available, that includes Continuous Shooting and High Dynamic Range mode (HDR). Some of the other features, that is available are Digital Zoom, Auto Flash, Face detection and Touch to focus. From the initial specification, we are not clear, whether the camera supports EIS or OIS. Neither there is any confirmation, whether the phone supports 4K recording or not. Our guess is no since this is not a camera phone and it is more a gaming phone, where performance and graphics matter most. So, if you are looking for a camera phone, then this phone will definitely not suit your requirement. It has got a host of connectivity options, that includes Wi-Fi 802.11, a/b/g/n, Bluetooth V5.0,4G-Volte, A-GPS, etc. The phone has got a mammoth battery of 4500 mAh, and that is equally complemented with fast charging. The battery is concealed and is not user replaceable. The phone has got Light sensor, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer along with all important Fingerprint Sensor (On Screen). It is a dual sim phone, and each of the slots can accommodate one Nano 4G sim. However, it does supports 2G and 3G sims as well. The phone will be launched with Android Pie or Android 9.0.
Should you buy this phone?
We would recommend Nubia Red Magic if you are looking for a gaming phone. Clearly, it disappoints on display and memory, both of them are quite important for a gaming phone. Moreover, ASUS didn’t specify a cooling solution for the phone, as a gaming phone heat up frequently. If you remember Nubia Red Magic has got a separate cooling solution, for enhanced cooling. Even though these phones guarantee performance, it clearly lacks on many fronts.
